I recently filmed and shot this fight with a couple close friends based on an audition I had been to. I’m fighting against my good friend, Emilien De Falco, who is actually Italian/French. He’s a great martial artist and had to learn this sword fight on his opposite hand. We shot for a total of 5 hours in the hot sun with people all around us. It was pretty difficult to find the best shots with nobody behind camera. Please forgive us! It was a fun time and we had a cool little fight to end with.

Props to Mark Griffin Jr and Marc Fajardo who helped to film this piece.

One thing I wanted to accomplish this year was to start shooting my own projects. Over the past few years, I’ve jotted down countless ideas from little scenes, to sketches, to dramatic pieces, action and comedy. I’m surrounded by such talented people here in Los Angeles and wanted to take advantage of that.

The inspiration of this video came from my niece and nephew, Kristen and Colin Rhee. Whenever I go back home to the east coast in Virginia, I spend a lot of time with my family. I try to take my niece and nephew around and be a good uncle to them. One thing I noticed from driving them around was they were completely into playing punch buggy. So I had a little idea planted into my head to shoot a sketch based on the game.

Here is the result of that idea. Hope you enjoy it!:

Always see the good in something….

A few weeks ago I was doing some emails to managers to see if they would be interested in me. I came across Eileen O’Farrell Personal Management, saw her clients listed on IMDBPro, and decided to send her an email.

“Hi Eileen!,

I’m an actor and I want a manager! Manage ME! NOW! PLEASE!”

~Desperate Actor

Ok no it wasn’t quite like that, but here in a shortened version…….

“Hi Eileen!

I recently did a stunt for MTV’s new show Death Valley, worked on a hilarious webisode called Matchstick McCoy, and was a lead actor in a beautiful film shot on the RED titled “Wind.”

I’m currently searching for new management and would love to meet, attached my headshots/resume/blah blah blah”

~David

And then…. I get a response! She says:

“Hi David,

I like your look. Please send your Actors Access profile.”

And I’m like suhweeeet! And I send back…

“Hey Eileen! No problem. Heres my actors access: [inserted link]“

And then I wait and wait and then she replies…

“Hi David, I like your look but sorry I don’t work with actors who don’t have their video up on Actors Access. Wish you the best.”

*GASP* I was like whoa! But then I though, ok I don’t want to have that issue in the future. I had just cut my demo reel to the point where I was ready to put it up anyways. She was right. I wasn’t thinking about it at the moment, but her email just gave me the little kick I needed. So, immediately after that email I called up my friend Marc Fajardo and asked him about how he got his video on AA. He said it was easy and I could do it all online and use a service such as WeTransfer to send them my video.

A few uploading minutes, some waiting, a few more minutes for downloading, a call from Actors Access, and about a $100 later, my video was online. Awesome!

This was a good thing. I decided to email Eileen and thank her for this important piece of advice. I wrote:

“Hi Eileen,

Just wanted to let you know that I took your advice and put my video online. Thank you so much and here’s a link for you in case you’d like to see it.”

She writes:

“That’s great David! It’s very important to have your video online and this alone will improve your audition ratio! Call me Monday if you’d like to set up a meeting.”

Woo! So I called her and met with her and she is a very lovely lady who is very honest and comes highly recommended by some of her other clients. She had great things to say about me that gave me the boost of energy and confidence I was thirsting for along with some great advice. I’m very excited to be working with her now and have newfound courage and determination to attack with =) Thank you Eileen because you have already done so much for me.

Look out for the new Matchstick McCoy webisodes! It was a fun project amongst friends and gave me a chance to play around and have fun. I play an actor who has the role of Shing on a TV show called Matchstick Mccoy. It all takes place in the 70′s, so there are a whole bunch of colorful characters.

Here’s the article from Slebisodes to describe the series in a bit more detail:

“Matchstick McCoy is an old fashioned cop with a contempt for authority and a love of Kung Fu. Constantly being on suspension doesn’t keep his boss, The Chief, from calling him in and partnering him up with yet another reluctant hero to get the job done. With stereotypes galore, story formulas mocked and exploitation exploited – each of the four episodes is a complete story with its own unique theme: The Oriental Express, The English Connection, Big and Black and Eye for an Eye. Matchstick McCoy presents a world that mixes the various exploitive genres from Kung Fu films, Blaxploitation, classic Bond, and good old American television action into a humorous spoof.”
